ESL Classes
When students register for ESL classes, they are given a written and oral English assessment to determine their class level. Project LEARN offers three ESL classes: ESL 1, ESL 2, and ESL Reading.
ESL Level 1 covers the very basics of English such as the alphabet, how to fill out forms with your name and address, counting, basic vocabulary like clothing and food, and beginner English writing, reading, and speaking.
ESL Level 2 covers intermediate English writing and grammar. Students are prepared for more complex English situations such as purchasing items in a store, ordering food in a restaurant, and answering and asking questions. Students learn how to read more complicated texts in this class and understand documents such as schedules and invoices.
ESL Level Reading prepares students for higher goals such as obtaining their GED or even college. This class focuses heavily on current events. Students read news articles and discuss and write about them. Students learn how to write essays and how to use critical thinking skills to express themselves regarding interesting and complex topics. It is common for students that wish to push themselves and their English skills to take both ESL 2 to obtain English grammar skills and ESL 3 to obtain advanced reading and writing skills.
